Cardiologist

A medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, also known as the cardiovascular system

C-reactive Protein (CRP)

A protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation.

Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO)

A condition that causes inflammation and bone lesions, primarily affecting children and adolescents.

Chronic non-infectious osteomyelitis (CNO)

Similar to CRMO but may have a broader range of causes.

Corticosteroids

A type of steroid that reduces inflammation and affects the immune system. Not to be confused with anabolic steroids, corticosteroids are used to treat a variety of problems.

Crohn's Disease

A type of inflammatory bowel disease that can cause inflammation of the digestive tract. A type of steroid that reduces inflammation and affects the immune system.

Cryopyrin

Also known as the NLRP3 protein, cryopyrin is a sensor protein found in almost all cell types that detects things that are not right in the cell (such as an infection or cell damage). When activated, it starts up an inflammatory response to respond to the problem.

Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS)

A group of rare autoinflammatory diseases on a spectrum of severity, including Familial Cold Autoinflammatory Syndrome (FCAS) and Muckle-Wells Syndrome (MWS).

Cytokine

A protein produced by the body that interacts with the cells of the immune system to help fight infection. When the body produces too much of a cytokine, it can cause inflammation and tissue destruction.

Cytokines: Signalling molecules of the immune system, including:

  • Interleukin-6 (IL-6): A key cytokine involved in inflammation.
  • Interleukin-1β (IL-1β): Another important cytokine involved in inflammation.
  • Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α): A pro-inflammatory cytokine.

DADA2 (Deficiency of Adenosine Deaminase 2)

A rare, inherited autoinflammatory disease caused by mutations in the ADA2 gene. It is characterized by systemic inflammation, vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels), and can also lead to early-onset stroke, cytopenias (low blood cell counts), and immunodeficiency.

Deficiency of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (DIRA)

A severe autoinflammatory disease characterized by systemic inflammation and skin lesions.
