Why might someone need such urgent access?
Autoinflammatory diseases can cause symptoms that are unpredictable and sometimes extremely urgent.
For some people, this can include:
- sudden diarrhoea or bowel urgency
- abdominal pain or cramping
- nausea or vomiting
- gastrointestinal inflammation
- symptoms associated with a disease flare
- medication-related gastrointestinal symptoms
- an inability to safely delay using the toilet

Not everyone with an autoinflammatory disease experiences these symptoms, and the card does not indicate a particular diagnosis.
The important thing is that the need is genuine, medical and potentially urgent. Please don't ask them to explain. Someone experiencing extreme urgency may be embarrassed, frightened or physically unwell. They may simply need to get to a toilet right now.
Please don't require them to disclose their diagnosis or provide personal medical information.
The ANZFAID Urgent Access Card is intended to communicate their need on their behalf.
